Inspired by the famous poem “if” by rudyard kipling, the mysteries of life, the foibles of humankind, and finally, a bit of psychological self-flagellation.
What is the purpose of this dance of life, the roles we act that make our destiny, this mystic blend of dream with fact?
What are the rules? What goals are there worth striving for – and why? Carefree pleasure; happiness? Is the aim to satisfy all wants – to seek avoidance of all sadness, grief and pain? For most of mankind that’s the all of life! Alas – in vain!
When young, realities – though cruel – are overcome by dreams, till hope is dashed by fortune-ill, or principle-less schemes relief – from pain, or fear, or threat – gives happiness a lift; and gratified desires, hopes, lusts – with these it comes too swift.” Freedom of speech – gone (political correctness) – civilization’s loss!
But not for long. Such means-to-end make only brief resource – the aftermath comes quickly – either boredom or remorse!
To crave and then acquire – wealth, power, fame – beyond compare provides for happy ego – adulation, envy – rare.
But emptiness lies therein. No hope higher to ascend bears fruit of pure despair – the certainty of glory’s end!
And so one asks, “what is it all about? How does one win?” And answers, ” hurt no-one! Love all! Find happiness within!”
Finally, set up goals of challenge, beyond your easy reach, and, “the joy is in the struggle,” is what you, to yourself, must teach!
