Barbados is such a wonderful and beautiful Island. Even though it is specially known for its fantastic beaches, its warm climate, and polite friendly locals, it is also a very scenic island. As Barbados is very small, the island is approximately only 14 miles by 21 miles, this gives a great advantage to being able to explore it. Barbados is a very green and luscious island full of vegetation as well as the sugar cane fields and the Island is made up of hills and valleys as well as the low calm clear beaches of the Caribbean sea and the rugged cliffs and shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean.
There are many different ways you can explore the island. One way could be finding a map and taking your own transport whether it be hiring a car, taxi or bus trips and visiting the key areas of Barbados. Ideally hiring a car for a day is a good way, you can explore at your own leisurely pace, stop where you want to stop for as long as you wish. Barbados is quite a safe island to do this and you will see many visitors whizzing around the coasts or inland in their little hired mini-mokes. These are the cheapest cars to hire. Alternatively there are many companies in Barbados which offer Island tours and many different packages are available. Here we explore some of these companies and packages they offer and look at what you would be exploring. Of course by going with an a company you will get a guided tour full of information on where you are and what you are seeing and may go to some places which you may not know about without the local information. Some of the Island Tour operators also do see excursions or sea and land excursions. Some of the excursions are all day and some are only half a day and because the sun rises early and sets early, the Barbados people or Bajans as they are also known start their days around 8am.
Two of the most popular Island tour operators are Island Safari and Adventureland 4×4. Both of these tour operators use specially adapted 4×4 vehicles to take you around the island, high up into hills. These vehicles are specially adapted with padded roll-bars and an open but covered top cab at the back which gives you a great view from your seat. All vehicles have seatbelts and each tour comes complete with the driver who doubles up as your knowledgeable guide. Depending on what tour you go on you will visit probably the North and East coast and stop at places such as The Lion at Gun Hill Station, Basheba and/or Bath on the East coast and Harry Smith Beach which gives you a great chance for all your photo opportunities. Some tours include a Bajan lunch tucked away on the East coast and refreshments. Many of these tours take you off the beaten track to places only but a few visitors will experience. Some small amount of walking will be required to see some of these unique unspoilt spots.
Gun Hill Signal Station was built in 1818 and part of a six signal station system that allowed messages via lanterns and flags to be relayed around the island. This station is 704 feet above sea level and offers a magnificent 360 degree view of the parish of St George with amazing views on a clear day to both the East & West of the island. This signal station also has the well known Lion statue which was hand carved out of a limestone rock by one of the soldiers based at the signal station when he was off duty. The beaches at Bathsheba and Bath are beautiful. Bathsheba is well known for its rugged rocks and provides the best waves for riding and becomes a surfers paradise. Bath beach is a rustic retreat with calmer waters and the shore is lined with little cottages painted in picturesque shades and is very scenic. Harry Smith beach is on the south East Coast and consists of dramatic cliffs and crystalline rock pools. At the top of the cliff is the remains of an old ruined house which would have been quite amazing in its day.
Island Safari tour operators have also put together a special rum tour to take you around a tour of the popular little rum shops, more commonly would be known to us as bars, to experience Barbados’ culture of Barbados’ famous little tipple. Here you will still find the old age tradition of dominoes being played outside. Of course you would need to be 18 or over to participate in this tour.
If you want to explore Barbados in some great detail and get a real for its history and culture then participating in one of these tours is a must and will give you an experience that you will not forget.
